What happens when you let photographer Annie Leibovitz take charge of the Pirelli Calendar for 2016?
Incredible things, apparently.
Yesterday the world was treated to a sneak peak at the traditionally supermodel filled calendar’s new look. It has since gone viral.
Featuring 13 famous female faces, the latest calendar moves away from its scantily clad reputation and instead, places influence over model status at the forefront of the campaign.
Amy Schumer, Serena Williams, Tavi Gevinson, Yoko Ono and Patti Smith are just some of the women staring in the beautiful black and white shots by Leibovitz.
She said, “they (Pirelli) came to me with the mandate that they would like to do something different but I didn’t let them in the door once I started shooting.”
Championing their talents and abilities over their aesthetic merits, this calendar embodies the cultural revolution that is currently bubbling across the globe.
In an effort to highlight the objectification of the female body, the pictures capture a diverse and confident group of women in a series of empowering shots.
This a movement that will ripple away metaphorically and physically for a long time as it will serve as a monthly reminder of the importance of body and mental confidence.
If it reminds just one women as she changes her calendar every month that she is valued for her mind and not her appearance, a difference has been made.
Vive la Révolution!
